You’ve had your consultation, and you’re excited and nervous about the treatment! If you want the best possible results, it’s essential to prepare for your procedure correctly. Scalp micropigmentation is a process in which pigment is implanted into the upper dermal layer of the scalp using a particular machine. This procedure creates an illusion of hair follicles. Scalp micropigmentation is non-surgical and non-invasive, but because it’s still a procedure that breaks the skin, your skin must be healthy, strong, and sensitive to things like chemicals or certain foods that cause itching or rashes, etc.
As part of any scalp micropigmentation procedure, you should avoid certain things for 48 hours before your treatment, such as
- Alcohol
- Caffeine
- Garlic
- Oily fish
- Vitamin E or Omega 3
The reason for this is that they are all blood thinners. Thinner blood means you will bleed more during your treatment, which in turn can lead to excessive bruising and pigment migration. This, in turn, could result in poor color retention.

Before you get your SMP procedure done, it is best to shave the whole scalp. You want your scalp to be as smooth as possible when experiencing the process. The day before the tattoo, you should wet shave everything off, making for better healing afterward. Two weeks before your procedure, it is best not to go out in the sun or tanning beds because they can cause skin cells to turn over faster, which causes fading and could also cause the treatment to be more painful. Also, do not exercise on the day of your treatment to not sweat and cause the skin to become oily.

If you feel unsure about your pain threshold, take two paracetamol 30-45 minutes before the treatment. This will help to reduce the pain. You can also bring a book or your phone with music on to distract you during the procedure, which will help with the pain. Take with you some sugary drinks or snacks as during the procedure your blood sugar levels are likely to drop, sugary drinks or snacks should restore these levels to normal again. Finally, please make sure you declare any allergies prior to having your procedure done because although it is exceedingly rare for someone to have an allergic reaction during scalp micropigmentation treatment, they do happen from time to time, so both you and your artist must log all allergies before any procedure takes place.
